Multi-State Milkweed Status - 008
Multi-State Milkweed Status - 008Monarchs are traveling hundreds of miles during their summer migration. A California butterfly tagged on May 24th was recovered in Twin Falls, Idaho on June 30th 2015. Read about that monarchs story on the Monarch Butterflies in the Pacific Northwest Facebook page.
While I was visiting Twin Falls, Idaho I saw 9 monarch eggs at Centennial Waterfront Park. Thousands of showy milkweed plants were seen along the roadsides. Most of the milkweed was about 50 feet from the roadside and near irrigation ditches and farm fences.
Viceroy butterflies use mimicry to make predators think they are monarchs. I'm not a predator but the mimicry made me think the viceroy was a monarch. On closer inspection it was clearly a viceroy butterfly. Take a look at the short video in the sidebar to see how similar the viceroy markings are to the monarch.
