The Western Winter Monarch population overwinter sites.
I took a trip to San Diego to look for monarchs in mid November. They had not arrived due to the warmer than normal temperatures. Read all about my trip in the blog titles S.D. Monarchs here.
If you live in the greater Los Angeles area then please consider participating in the Monarchs and Milkweed of Los Angeles project. Data there is collected by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Their website address is linked for your convience. http://www.inaturalist.org/projects/monarchs-and-milkweed-of-los-angeles
California monarch butterfly population count 2018
Preliminary Thanksgiving 2018 count results. Early Thanksgiving Counts Show a Critically Low Monarch Population in California The California overwintering population has been reduced to less than 0.5% of its historical size, and has declined by 86% compared to 2017. source: https://xerces.org/2018/11/29/critically-low-monarch-population-in-california/
California monarch butterfly population count 2014
Data is arriving for the 2014 Monarch Count. See the 2014 County by County Monarch Population here. I have reviewed the data and it appears as though there are more 2014/2015 overwintering monarchs in California this winter than there have been in the last 11 years. One reason may be that more observers are reporting numbers during the count. Or, as I am hoping, the entire population is higher going into the Spring of 2015. Either way this is exciting news.
