Want to be sure I'm providing you with the best numbers possible when I report population and it's important to make a correction when I make a mistake in episode 13 regarding the population of the Western monarchs I made the error of saying something to the effect of the 2007 Monarch population had a little over 1 million monarchs that's actually 1997 so I confess that's the third time in my life that I've made an error of entire decade this spring I have a birthday coming up and I'll be 34 years old so once you reach 34 there's actually a couple decades that can be skipped fortunately I'm only skipping one decade in the errors that I'm making if you go to grow milkweed plants.com/013 in the transcription the numbers were reported accurately be sure and stay tuned to the end of this episode him to be talking about the 2016 milkweed madness online event where milkweed plants are going to be tracking the NCAA March madness basketball tournament brackets I'll let you know how you can login and enroll and that will make you eligible to win milkweed seeds this spring is currently late in the winter of 2016 and in addition to the monarchs traveling north from Mexico this month and the future months also Word of the Monarch area population down in central Mexico is traveling north associated Press reported the numbers Monarch joint venture has information on their website about the Eastern Monarch population numbers and also monarch watch is reporting the numbers on their website as well as I mentioned in the introduction the Monarch numbers are up this year but how high up our they let's take a moment to get in the mood with some bum music from Jeff and Paige…

Thanks Jeff and Paige that song is titled the great Monarch migration and it's in their mighty wolf album it's an album created for children for children's music and yet listening to a song about milkweed the mighty thrown it if you want to listen that song in its entirety it's available at iTunes you can go to grammatical plans.com/ zero one four and click through the affiliate link that's available on the website there I did receive a small commission if you download that song but it's a no additional cost to you first part of understanding the population of Monarch butterflies in Mexico is that it's measured a little bit differently than it is on the west coast so western monarchs they use a formula to determine the density of the monarchs in a given tree or cluster and then they make a guesstimation that's fairly accurate Numbers however Numbers in Mexico the populations are so dense and cover such a large area that they're counting the area of the trees that are covered in local measurement which is hectors which are similar to Akers although there's a conversion this year the population in area of butterflies was 4.01 ha 4.01 hectors is an increase from last year's overwintering population where the number of hectors was 1.13 point 13 2014 year before that two years ago it was .67 which was an all time low so two years of increases in the Monarch butterfly population on the eastern coast and two years and increases as good D increase from last year is more substantial I close to triple as opposed to be increased from .67 to 1.13 where was that closer to almost doubling so if we can keep the exponential growth going that's going to be a really good thing if we were to triple the population over the summer into the 2016 2017 season in Mexico we would see over 12 actors of area covered by monarchs in Mexico and that would exceed what Chip Taylor's looking for Dr. Chip Taylor at Mark watch he's trying to get as sustainable number at six sectors so 4.01 hectors is still little bit of a loan number meaning that the mark population is still at risk and bad weather bad milkweed other problems could potentially influence the population in a negative manner for those of us in United States actors is kind of a foreign measurement to us will use acres in United States 4.01 actors hectors is equal to 9.9 point nine acres last year's area covered by monarchs was 1.3 point three actors that's 3.2 point two acres so what that tells me is that each location had approximately just over 1 acre of monarch butterflies so when you take the information about 9.9 acres covered to substantial when really it's at nine locations if they would be evenly dispersed they're only covering about 1 acre in each of the locations I'm currently looking out the window at my property besides having landscapers which I've torn down part of the fence to get access to the backyard consider how many butterflies a monarch butterfly population explosion would be and that's my goal here grow mopey plants is a monarch butterfly population explosion I'd like to see all hundred plus sectors of land in the forest down in central Mexico like to see that entirely covered with monarch butterflies and tourism increasing and Pharma crop yields going up to to increase pollination and all of the many benefits of the Monarch butterfly population explosion and that's basically why started grow milkweed plants is to get seeds out there and get milk with plants growing really restore this population mark butterflies to the point where children growing up in the future are amazed at the quantity of Mark butterflies and it just creates a better world living
