We gladly replace seeds that arrive damaged or incorrect at no additional cost. Please contact us before returning an item so we can provide instructions and ensure your issue is resolved quickly. Shipping costs for returns are the responsibility of the customer unless the return is due to an error on our part or damaged seeds. Refunds will be processed to the original payment method once the returned seeds are received. 

Germinating Asclepias californica californica (California milkweed)

Step 1: Hydrate the Seeds

Begin by exposing the seeds to warm, moist conditions for 48 hours. Maintain a temperature of about 75°F. Two effective methods are:

• Place seeds in a damp paper towel.

• Submerge seeds in a cup of water.

• Freshen water every 12 to 24 hours.

This hydration step wakes the embryo from dormancy and prepares the root radical for growth.

Step 2: Excise the Root Radical

Once hydrated, carefully expose the root radical. This step encourages quicker and stronger germination. Choose one of the following.

• With scissors or clippers: snip the very tip of the seed coat, taking care not to damage the emerging root itself.

• With tweezers: gently peel back the seed jacket from the root tip.

Handle with caution—if the radical itself is cut or crushed, the seed will not survive.

Step 3: Encourage Root Growth

Return the seed to a damp environment. A paper towel laid flat on a plate works well. To slow evaporation:

• Add water as needed to keep the towel moist.

• Optionally, slip the plate into an open plastic bag to retain humidity while still allowing air exchange.

Keep the environment warm and moist, between 75°F–85°F. Within a few days, the root radical should elongate.

Step 4: Transition to Substrate

Once the root is the length of the seed, move it into a well-draining medium. Perlite is an excellent choice.

• Place the root into the substrate, leaving the seed body positioned above the surface.

• Cover the container loosely with a plastic bag to maintain humidity until the first true leaves develop.

Step 5: Grow Into Seedlings

As leaves unfold, remove the humidity cover. Provide:

• Bright light (natural or artificial grow lights).

• Consistently warm conditions.

At this stage, the seedlings will strengthen and can later be transplanted into soil.

This method accelerates the natural process for a species that can otherwise be slow or erratic to sprout. It is especially helpful when working with limited seed stock of Asclepias californica californica.
