A distinctive native milkweed of the southeastern United States and an especially characteristic species of Florida’s dry, sandy scrub and sandhill habitats. Its broad blue-green to purplish leaves are marked by striking pink or reddish veins, giving the plant an ornamental appearance even before flowering.
Clusters of pale pink to nearly white flowers emerge close to the foliage and provide nectar for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Like other native Asclepias, Sandhill milkweed serves as a host plant for monarch caterpillars and is particularly valuable in landscapes designed to reflect Florida’s native upland ecosystems.
This species is best suited to full sun and very well-drained, sandy soil. It is adapted to hot, drought-prone sites and generally performs poorly in rich, wet, or heavily amended garden soil. For Florida growers, it is an excellent choice for scrub, sandhill, xeric native gardens, and other dry naturalistic plantings.
Seeds may benefit from a period of cold-moist stratification before germination.
Fresh seed for establishing a uniquely Floridian native milkweed adapted to dry, sandy landscapes.
