A native North American thistle found in prairies, open grasslands, foothills, roadsides, and other sunny, well-drained habitats. Its silvery-green, deeply lobed leaves and large lavender-purple flower heads give it a rugged, distinctly western appearance.

The showy blooms are highly attractive to native bees, bumblebees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while the mature seeds can provide food for birds. Unlike many introduced thistles, Wavyleaf thistle is a native species and can be an excellent addition to prairie restorations, wildlife gardens, and naturalized plantings.

Plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil and are well adapted to dry conditions once established. The species develops a strong taproot and is best suited to areas where it can remain undisturbed.
